Women On Television πŸ“Ί

This Has Been A Super Busy December πŸ‘©πŸΎ‍πŸ’» BUT I Wanted To Share Some Of My Research From School. This Was My Favourite Final Assignment & I Had To Share It With My IG Fam. 😁 Sooo.. I Had To Study A Trend In The Television Industry & Instantly I Knew What I Wanted To Do. Being A Young Black Woman Studying Television, I Knew I Had To Focus On Black Women (& Other Women Of Colour) In The Industry. Here’s A Few Facts; * Women Have Fewer Roles On Television With Only 40% Of All Speaking Roles & 27 % Of All Behind The Scenes Roles. * Black Women Have 19% Of All Speaking Roles On Television. * Latinas & Asian Women Only Have 6-7% Of Speaking Roles. * 68% Of Programs Employed 5 Or Less Women In BTS Roles. * In Contrast, 45% Of All Programs Employed 14 Or More Men. * According To 2017 Statistics, Women Were More Likely To Play A Personal Role (Wife, Girlfriend, Mother). While Males Were More Likely To Have Work-Oriented Roles (Business Owner, Doctor, Lawyer). * Black Panther Stayed At #1 At The Box Office For 5 Consecutive Weeks * Black Panther Is The #5 Highest Grossing Domestic Movies. (Number Changes Due To Inflation Adjustments) With So Many Talented, Beautiful & Intelligent Black Women Pursuing Careers In The TV Industry, The Percentage Shouldn’t Be So Low. As A Little Black Girl Watching Television With Her Mom, I Was Always So Disappointed I Couldn’t Relate To Anyone On Screen. I Would Be Shown This Image Of What Beauty Is & I Didn’t Fit The Description. With My Kinky Hair, My Caramel Complexion & My Curvier Figure, I Didn’t Look Like The Actresses I Saw. Not Only Could I Not Relate To Anyone On TV, But In School Also. Growing Up In A Predominantly White Neighbourhood Had A Huge Effect On My Self Confidence. I Knew God & My Family Loved Me But I Truly Didn’t Think I Was Beautiful. I Wanted To Be What I Saw On Television, Lighter Skin, Straighter Hair & A Smaller Figure. That Was Until I First Watched The One & Only #OprahWinfrey . Watching Her Talk Show After School With My Mom Would Soon Become The Highlight Of My Day. Although I Didn’t Understand Much, She Inspired Me Beyond Measure. Slowly But Surely I Grew To Love My Black Skin, My Brown Eyes, My Thick Kinky Hair & My Figure. I’ve Grown To Love Everything I Was Told Was Different Or Weird. I’ve Grown To LOVE Being A STRONG BLACK WOMAN! πŸ‘ΈπŸΎ πŸ‘ΈπŸΏπŸ‘ΈπŸ½The Television Industry Is Slowly Becoming Equal For All Ethnicities, All Genders & All Religions.
